Which to pick if…
If the job is “Calling Claude from your own product”
Pick Anthropic API (8.3). Claude is a default choice for coding and careful tool use. Trade-off: You are on one lab's roadmap and rate limits.
Listed alternatives: OpenAI API, Gemini API, OpenRouter.
If the job is “The model API most libraries already speak”
Pick OpenAI API (8.0). The widest support in frameworks and examples. Trade-off: The bill tracks usage, and usage on agents adds up.
Listed alternatives: Anthropic API, Gemini API, OpenRouter.
If the job is “Switching models without switching SDKs”
Pick OpenRouter (7.9). One account instead of five provider consoles. Trade-off: A middleman means another status page and another markup.
Listed alternatives: Groq, OpenAI API, Anthropic API.
If the job is “Low-latency calls to open models”
Pick Groq (7.7). Speed is the reason to pick it. Trade-off: The model menu is not the same as OpenAI or Anthropic flagships.
Listed alternatives: OpenRouter, Gemini API, Mistral.
If the job is “A capable model API with a free starting quota”
Pick Gemini API (7.6). A free tier has been part of the offer. Trade-off: Free-tier quotas are not a production plan.
Listed alternatives: OpenAI API, Anthropic API, Groq.
If the job is “A European model API, or open weights you can host”
Pick Mistral (6.7). API and open weights are both real options. Trade-off: Ecosystem examples still assume OpenAI first.
Listed alternatives: Groq, OpenRouter, OpenAI API.

Opus 4.8 fast mode deprecated
On October 30, 2026, Anthropic deprecated fast mode for Claude Opus 4.8, with removal on November 30, 2026. After removal, requests to claude-opus-4-8 with speed set to fast return an error. To continue using fast mode, migrate to Claude Opus 5.5.

On October 29, 2026, Anthropic launched the Usage and Cost Analytics API in beta with the analytics-usage-cost-2026-08-24 beta header. Its /v1/organizations/analytics/usage and /v1/organizations/analytics/cost endpoints report token usage and cost for Claude Console and Claude Enterprise organizations. Results can be filtered and grouped by dimensions such as model, workspace, API key, and the user or service account behind each request. The Usage and Cost API is now a legacy API, and so are the usage_report, cost_report, user_usage_report, and user_cost_report endpoints of the Claude Enterprise Analytics API. All of them remain supported.

On October 29, 2026, Mistral released the weights of an updated Mistral Large 4, also called Le Chonk, after the earlier public preview. Mistral says further reinforcement learning improved coding and defensive cybersecurity, and that reasoning efficiency lowered inference cost. The model adds three reasoning modes: Low for simple tasks, which replaces None, Medium for everyday tasks, and High, the default, for the hardest cases. It is available in Mistral Studio, through the Mistral API, and on OpenRouter. The weights can be downloaded from Hugging Face and served with vLLM or SGLang. The Mistral Ecosystem Open-Weight license, a modified MIT license, allows use, modification, fine-tuning, and commercialization, and a business that operates a model-as-a-service offering needs a separate commercial license from Mistral. API pricing is $0.70 per million input tokens, $0.07 per million cached input tokens, and $2.10 per million output tokens. Mistral says the model scores 19.7% on Cognition's FrontierCode 2.0 and 48% on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, effectively tied with GLM-5.3 while using 47% fewer tokens per task on average. It says Terminal-Bench 4.0 rose 13 percentage points from the public preview to 41%, with 30% fewer output tokens, and that the Artificial Analysis Cyber Index score is 51%, with a 96.6% average refusal rate on the malicious cyber prompts it measures.

On October 27, 2026, Google released the Gemini API CLI (gemini-api) in beta. It is a stateless, zero-dependency command-line client for AI coding agents, scripts, and CI pipelines. It uses the Interactions API to generate text and media, analyze files, and run Gemini managed agents.

On October 26, 2026, OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra. It is available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex, and in the API as gpt-6.1-terra. OpenAI describes it as a fast model for visual reasoning, computer use, and writing. Standard API pricing is $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens, and $5 per million output tokens, which OpenAI says is 50% lower than GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol. For the most complex coding tasks, OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra remain the better choice.

On October 26, 2026, new projects using the Gemini Generate Content API (generateContent, streamGenerateContent, and batchGenerateContent) on the paid tier store requests by default (store=true), matching the Interactions API. Existing projects keep their current setting. To opt out, set store=false on a request or turn off Generate Content API logging in the Settings panel of the Logs and Datasets dashboard.
