Ranking

The best AI code editor in 2026

Our pick: Cursor (8.6). It’s the one to choose if you want a single editor to live in, on a real repo. If you’d rather keep your current editor, choose GitHub Copilot.

This ranking is for people who drive an editor every day, not for generating an app in one shot. If that’s what you want, see AI app builders.

Picks by situation

  • One editor for everything

VS Code-compatible, so most extensions and shortcuts carry over Agent, chat, and inline edit share the repo you already have open

  • Keep VS Code or JetBrains

Deep tie-in to GitHub repositories, pull requests, and accounts The agent experience is split across the editor, the Copilot app, and the CLI

  • Speed

The editor is free and open source Performance is the product, which matters on large files Extension coverage is not VS Code's

  • Many agents at once

Running several coding agents from one IDE. Some docs still say Windsurf.

  • Open source, bring your own model

Owning the extension and choosing the model. Best price-value in this ranking (9). You assemble the model, keys, and config yourself

  • Large legacy codebase

Context on a big repo you did not start yesterday

  • Prefer JetBrains

People who will not leave IntelliJ or PyCharm

  • Prefer the terminal?

It isn’t an editor, but see Claude Code (8.3) and Cursor vs Claude Code.

What shipped recently

  1. GitHub Copilot

  2. Cursor
